Can I use Motability?

The Motability Scheme helps you get mobile by exchanging your higher rate mobility allowance to lease a new affordable car, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle, scooter or powered wheelchair. You may qualify to lease a car through Motability if you receive the enhanced mobility component of Personal Independent Payment (PIP), or receive the higher rate mobility for Disability Living Allowance (DLA).

Motability can link you with people who are highly experienced in helping people find the right car and choosing the right adaptations. Leasing your car through Motability may also free up some of your money to spend on other needs. However, this will depend on the vehicle you lease.

How does Motability work?

Your benefit (PIP or DLA) will be paid directly to the Motability scheme each month to pay for your lease. How much of your benefit will go towards your vehicle will depend on which one you choose.

If you buy a vehicle with a high specification, you may need to make an additional payment upfront.

When leasing a vehicle from Motability, the payment will also include:

  • insurance, including tyre and windscreen replacement cover, breakdown cover, vehicle tax
  • some of the more common adaptations if fitted at the time of the lease
  • servicing, parts and maintenance.

For more information visit the Motability website or see our Motability page.
