New clues as to why Thalidomide caused birth defects

eLife have published a study claiming that scientists at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute now know why Thalidomide caused birth defects when ingested during pregnancy. Dr Fischer who works at the institute says:

'My lab is deeply invested in the development of novel therapeutic strategies that build on the same mechanism of action as thalidomide, what we call "targeted protein degradation." We are pursuing many projects that aim at better understanding and derivatizing thalidomide.'
