When driving in the UK you need to be aware of any low emission zones (LEZ) and associated vehicle restrictions or charges.

If you are going to be driving abroad there are a number of key issues that you need to be aware of, depending on which country you will be in.

UK Clean Air Zones

A Clean Air Zone (CAZ) is an area in the UK where action is being taken to reduce pollution levels and improve air quality. This can involve restrictions on where you can drive and the type of vehicle that can be driven in these areas. There may also be a charge if you drive in a CAZ.

In London there are different area restrictions depending on whether you are in the low emission zone (LEZ) or the ultra low emission zone (ULEZ).

Before you travel check the restrictions and charges to avoid fines.

Check Clean Air Zones and London low and ultra low emission zones on the Gov.uk website

Driving abroad - General advice

Before driving abroad you should check if you need to comply with any driving rules or carry specific equipment and information. This will avoid disruptions to your journey or any fines.

The things you need to be aware of or comply with can include:

  • Documentation to take with you
  • Clean Air Zones that may have different restrictions than in the UK
  • Accepted payment cards
  • Drink driving limits
  • Rules of the road affecting equipment that you need to have with you

Visit the AA website where there is an excellent guide to help you identify what you need to know for each country.

The Gov.uk website also has advice by country.

Using your Blue Badge for parking while abroad

Your UK Blue Badge is recognised in some EU countries and may be accepted in other countries across the world. However, you may also be required to download and print a local parking card to be displayed with your UK Blue Badge behind the car windscreen.

Recognition of foreign issued parking cards is always at the discretion of the administering authority in the host country. You should always check locally before parking to avoid fines.

To check the guidance for EU countries visit the Gov.uk website page Using a Blue Badge in the EU and European Economic Area.

You can also visit the FIA Guide for the Disabled Traveller to check advice on using your UK Blue Badge in the EU and across the world.

Driving with a caravan

If you are planning to drive in the EU with a caravan check for any rules or restrictions by country. Please note that information may have changed since Brexit so it is important to make sure you are up to date.
