Thalidomide Holiday at the Mar Y Sol
Fantastic opportunity for a sunshine holiday
Many of you tell us that you would love to go on holiday but have no-one to go with. Why not give this organised holiday a try and make new friends at the same time?
Although this is not being organised by the Trust, we are happy to support you to make your booking and arrangements if it all sounds too complicated – just contact the H&W team.

Claudio and Udo – German Thalidomide Survivors are planning a weeks long activity holiday in Tenerife and would like to extend their invite to UK beneficiaries. They are happy to announce the date of the holiday is July 20th to 27th 2019, at the Hotel Mar Y Sol.
This is the second such event – the first was held in the same hotel in July 2015 and attended by over 150 thalidomiders from around the world – including Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, UK and Australia.
Participants can choose how much or how little they want to join in the activities and trips – some activities are planned at the hotel. Otherwise people can choose to remain at the hotel and relax with the company of other thalidomiders.
The holiday is still in the early planning stages and they would like to know any ideas you have regarding activities or workshops that could offered.
This was an excellent week in the sunshine surrounded by other Thalidomiders from Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia and the UK. There were many activities and trips arranged - singing, jewellery making, Pilate’s classes - as well as a boat trip. You can choose to join in the organised activities to whatever degree you choose or you can do your own thing.
There is no better accessible hotel (in my opinion) than the Mar-y-Sol - from the rooms to the pool to the sun loungers - everything is designed to be accessible. There is also the opportunity to hire equipment (bath seats, hoists, etc) on the site as well as personal support. Again, as much help as you need - to either get dressed or undressed or help in the swimming pool.

It is likely that there will be two days during that weeks on which excursions for all will be offered. What, how, when, where to …??? Planning is still underway!

From the feedback from some of the participants that attended in the past, they said there were too many choices. That’s why the format will change for 2019.
Please tell us what you would like to do; what you are interested in; what you need. We will check and see if and what it is doable in which way.
Booking
The booking process is different to previous years. Please now book directly with the hotel by calling +34 922-750-540. The Tenerife Sur Airport is just a 15 minute drive from the Mar Y Sol Hotel and there is an accessible transfer available. You can stay for the full week or even longer if you wanted to.

If you prefer a different hotel, please organise that yourself either via a travel agent or by using the internet.
Sign language interpreters as well as helpers (for example for help at the buffets) will be on location.
Hazel was part of the last international gathering at Mar-y-Sol, but has also used the hotel on a regular basis for the past 6 years - sometimes staying for several weeks/months and even over Christmas!
The best bit for me about Mar Y Sol other than the all-round accessibility, friendly staff, sun, near an accessible beach, is the fact you can get massages and other helpful therapies there too.
A deposit as a contribution towards expenses of €100.00 per person to organise necessities like assistance and sign language interpreters will be required for beneficiaries to take part. As soon as you have booked your accommodation with the hotel please email Barbara with the information that you are coming and where you are staying. She will then send you a request for payment of €100.00 per person including the bank account information.
